Motorcycle discipline

How many times have we seen news reports of people injured due to motorcycle accidents? How many times have we heard our authorities warning our fellowmen to take extra precautions when riding a motorcycle? How many people we personally know had their lives changed because of split seconds of supposedly avoidable circumstances? How many more will be part of the statistics just because they have the money to buy a motorcycle but don’t have the skill (worse, didn’t even care to acquire it) or discipline to stay safe while in the streets? These and among other questions will remain yet to be answered and if until when, your guess is just as good as mine. Here’s a scary and disappointing sight which I finally captured while stuck in traffic.
Now you may wonder what prompted me to aim my camera at these motorcycle riders as if knowing what is about to happen? Well, in my daily commute lately, I have this observation that those who normally would drive recklessly are those motorcycles with “For Registration” plates (the rider on the left has this plate). This means that these motorcycles are brand new – bagong bili. Bagong kuha sa dealer. And this also means that “most likely”, the riders of these motorcycles are among those who are excited mag-motor, di pa kabisado ang motor, or gustong i-show off ang motor. Whatever the case, these are people who are prone to commit mistakes and an eventual mishap, either by their own fault or not. So as long as they continue to exist and as long as our government doesn’t act on this growing market and the incident that comes along with it, we can expect more and more wasted lives and affected families in the next days, weeks or months to come.

This blog isn’t meant to single out motorcycle drivers but is intended as another reminder to those using this alternative transportation to always stay safe.
