I Concede

It’s May 13 and still cannot believe that in just 3 days after the election, everything seems to coming back to normal. The election fever is now simmering down – with some few exceptions. Without this automated election, I can just imagine how everyone during this time could be still glued to news sources – from modern TVs to the lowly transistor radios & tabloids just to anxiously monitor the progress of the ballots counting while wondering when the winners will be proclaimed. But thanks to the brave people who pushed for this first ever automation against all odds, we are now coming back to normal as quickly as naysayers expect it to be.

This milestone in the Philippine elections brought about a lot of surprises. There’s just so much difference from the previous elections that most of us Filipinos were used to. This time the ballot looks a lot different – I don’t know if it’s just me but it actually reminds me of our NCEE forms. Also gone are the crude yellow ballot boxes inside the precincts, and the backbreaking and dangerous task of taking it out of the public school classrooms to be brought to the canvassing areas – wherein chaos & fraud usually ensue. And what surprises me more is the number of those declaring their concession of the fact that they lost a hard fought battle. I concede became the IT word.

Most candidates and their supporters alike conceded defeat in just more than 24 hours – this used to take weeks with the old Flintstone system. We saw people like Villar who despite engaging passionately in the campaign, especially against the now leading Noynoy Aquino, and spending more than a billion pesos in his bid for presidency, humbly appeared before the camera to accept losing big time. Other gentlemen like JC Delos Reyes, Bro. Eddie Villanueva and my candidate, Gibo Teodoro followed – and like him, I concede.

I concede to the fact that the person I had doubts of being capable of leading and reforming the country has won. I have no choice but to concede that after all he may possess what it takes to be the next president, at least that’s how the majority of the voting populace of this country has decided – either by informed-decision making or plain popularity. I concede that I now have to divert my full support to Noynoy just so I can still remain true to my belief, among other Filipinos, that I am for real change in the system no matter how it now appears that Noynoy and the Filipinos will be facing tough challenges ahead. I concede that from now onwards, the famous words of the late American President John F. Kennedy, “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country” will take a more personal meaning. I concede, I will support and I will act, for this is what my candidate Gibo Teodoro wants us to be.

Sulong Pilipinas. Remember Gibo, let’s support Noynoy.

According to the latest figures, the VP slot is still leaning towards Binay. As much as I’d love to see my bet Mar Roxas win, chances are though that sooner or later I will once again surrender to the fact that Binay will assume being our next Vice-president. We’ll see…
