Learning while running

Well, sort of. But hey, at least I made the connection. I was running my butt off this morning on the treadmill and while trying to earn more time and distance, I tried to distract myself by grabbing the nearest book from our book shelf. The small one came off easily from the clutter. It’s the book titled Leadership which was given to me by dear wifey years ago. Steadying myself, I searched for today’s date.

March 17′s page has this heading, “Guarding Against The Sluggard.” The passage from the short meditation in this pocket-size book by John C. Maxwell says, “The sluggard in the physical sense does nothing for the world around him; he leaves it unchanged…The sluggard in the spiritual sense is little different; he leaves the whole world no better than he found it, and perhaps a little poorer.” Hmm. So does it mean that despite being physically active, we can still not claim that we are the same spiritually? And to say that someone is masipag at matiyaga may essentially mean nothing at all in the spiritual sense? Now, that’s interesting. The famous motivational author added, “When leaders become lazy and lose their diligence in doing good for God, they become spiritual sluggards and worthless to the kingdom.” Ouchy!

In between huffs and puffs, I glanced at the digital display of the almost pristine treadmill. I realized that all the while I lost just 80 calories. It’s pathetic. I need to do more. So I shifted my eye to the adjoining page of the book and continued reading tomorrow’s piece, “The Will to Do What’s Right.” As I feel sweats trickling all over my torso, the first sentence immediate struck me, “Discipline is doing what you really don’t want to do, so that you can do what you really want to do.” With half of me checking my stride to see if I’m out of the narrow gray tread and half of me reflecting on what I’ve just read, it occurs to me that the two pages may after all be related a lot to the upcoming May 10 elections – on top of me losing weight. The first one was more about the leader, or in this case, the candidates; while the succeeding page was about the voters. Both of which combined means that: First, we need to look for a person with integrity and capacity (if who has it, is the big question); Second, we need to do it rationally and, believe it or not, requires a lot of discipline to do so. Short and simple, yet not.

The Election Day is coming in fast – faster than I can do the treadmill. Remember that in our hands depend what our next 6 years will be like. As voters, let’s all be wary and respond according to our conscience and rational thinking. Let’s not get lost amidst the empty promises and narcissistic platforms. We’ve been through this before and now is the time we show to our children that we are not adults with short memories and that we actually learn from all our mistakes in selecting our past leaders. This time let’s arm ourselves with information. Read, read, watch, watch, decide, decide. Whew! Come to think about it, I can actually just think about the election and lose significant weight. Nah.
