Fast Fist and Fast Cars Day

After months of anticipation, the wait is finally over. For today is not only when the famous Manny Pacquiao returns to the ring but also another seven-time title holder (in the racing world) of Ferrari fame, Michael Schumacher, returns to F1 race after a 3-year hiatus. I can’t actually count how many shared interests my wife and I have, but if there’s two that we enjoy watching most it must be boxing and F1 racing. And today we got the best of both worlds. Well, not really the best that I expected it to be.
The boxing match between the Pacman and his challenger, Clottey, once again proved historic for several reasons. For one, it is the first boxing matching to be held in the gigantic Dallas Cowboy stadium in Texas. Therefore it follows that the 50,000 plus fans who packed the modern stadium breaks records as well. Another thing that I’m also certain is that this is probably the fight wherein thousands of Filipinos felt a bit disappointed this time that the lighting-fast fist of the Pacman didn’t result to the usual knockout of most of his recent opponents. With due respect to the capability of the Pacman, he is not to be blamed; because by replaying the fight again and again will reveal that those relentless punches were packed with both power and speed and prevailed all the way from round 1 to 12. Of course the replay will also reveal how Clottey trained all the time most likely by tying his fists to his head, and his elbows to his body to come up with a very impenetrable defense against the Pacman. What a shame. If I were him, I’d still cover my face with my fists even until I arrive back in Ghana.
Now for the real fast machines, F1 has opened the 2010 season also on this same day. The Bahrain race reintroduced the seven-time Formula 1 Driver Champion, Michael Schumacher. This time though, after retiring in 2007, he didn’t rejoin the team that has been synonymous to his name, Ferrari; and this fact is what made me feel apprehensive of this year’s F1 season. If I’m not mistaken, since wifey and I got married, it was just more than a year or two when we had cable TV subscription and eventually (re)discovered the world of F1. Since then we’ve become Ferrari fans. So to see Schumi getting into an F1 car that is not RED seems a bit weird to me and I’m sure others who have known him as a ‘prancing horse’s driver’ feel the same thing. Anyway, Schumi is now driving for team Mercedes (a merger of 2009′s BrawnGP and Petronas Formula 1). Today he finished 6th. Can’t wait to see if he can once again prove that it’s not all about the car but it’s all about the one who drives it.

More on boxing:
- *During today’s match, one will clearly see the big difference between the coaches of the two boxers. Clottey’s coach has been heard saying about, “take a chance, take a chance” while Roach has been talking about tactics all along. Now that’s bad coach and good coach for you.
- *The Pacman is probably one boxer who can’t be matched by anyone soon. His speed, power and endurance are just phenomenal. I’d say he can really knockout the foul-mouthed Mayweather, Jr. (and Sr. if possible).
- *Clottey I think didn’t come to the fight to win over Pacquiao but rather just to prove that he can be a very good live punching bag. “Manny, please hire this guy.”
- *I’m yet to hear a very good singer of our national anthem. The last one I heard was Geneva Cruz (can’t remember who got knocked out after that). Sorry Arnel Pineda, but you didn’t hit the right note.
- *Again, why can’t we just sing the national anthem the way we sing it in our school? Next time, let’s send 3-5 elementary pupils and I’m sure they’ll do a better job.

More on F1:
- *Today is the very first time that I saw a Lotus F1 car in action. The first time a saw an image of was way back during the Trump Card days.
- *I’m now a half-fan of Ferrari. I’m not quite comfortable yet accepting the fact that Alonso has joined the team. If I cheer for Ferrari, it will be for Massa.
- *There are now 3 F1 race fans in the house – wifey and I, and the little Marcus. Finally, we agreed to be on the same TV channel at least once or twice a month. Hahaha.

Mood: 3/10 Honks! (so this is how it feels like to watch the opening of F1 unemployed.)
