Marcus can pray

Published by crisn under Life, Parenting

Dear God,

It’s been quite a remarkable week…last Sunday, I was able to finally see in person one of my favorite cartoon characters, Dora and her sidekick monkey, Boots. I was surprised to see that they’re quite big yet cuddly. I wonder how they get to sit on an airplane.

Monday was another exciting although painful day. While waiting to get my booster shot, daddy, mommy and I played at the nearby entertainment area. Daddy got Odie among the many toys inside the coin-operated claw machine. It was his first time. I must be his lucky charm, huh? But then again, maybe I’m not…because a little while the doctor’s injection got me to cry like a baby. Errr, I’m STILL a baby, I forgot…but I won’t forget her face.

On Tuesday, I felt that you sent more of your tiny-winged cherubs with us while in the supermarket because I had a bad fall coming from the grocery cart. I hit my head on the fruit shelves but I think someone invisible cushioned my fall. I saw daddy froze for a sec, as I flip my way down, maybe because he can’t get through the tiny-winged cherubs who immediately gathered around to save me. Daddy and mommy were sure shocked and scared as I cried in pain and fear for minutes. Later though I was running around the aisle trying to dislodge grocery items.

Today is a good day. In the morning I woke up fine as if yesterday’s incident didn’t happen. After my afternoon nap, it was even better. Daddy was able to fix my toy helicopter and it’s now running on 4 batteries instead of 6. Daddy said it will benefit the environment and will save him from buying a new toy and a pair of new batteries. Now I wonder if he’ll ever buy me a new bike…

Anyway, thank you again for being with me all the time. I need you more than before because I’m now getting more active almost everyday…Please be with me later when I force my mom or dad to let me climb our window grills…

Love,

Marcus

I also don’t eat utan

Published by crisn under Food, Movie

Other than enjoying a cholesterol-filled dinner of small-sized crabs (I don’t consider it crablets), what topped off this unhealthy night is this Ilonggo Indie film clip which I saw from one of my Facebook friend’s post. The title alone captured my attention due to a couple of reasons: First, as a kid I hate veggies and even until now I eat it just for health’s sake – if given the choice I won’t touch and more so eat one. Second, the title is in Ilonggo, my native tongue.

So here’s that clip that made me to have mixed emotions as I always have this second thought of seeing animals being slaughtered for food. I’m a meat eater but as much as possible I’d rather not watch that food-to-be’s life taken in front of me. But then again, I don’t eat utan. Tough choice, huh? Anyway, enjoy this clip.

This reminds me of last weekend while in Batangas. We were in a birthday party when I saw this group of men gathered around a cow tied to a post. Although, I haven’t witnessed a cow being slaughtered up close, I already had the idea what is about to happen next. The gory thought of a poor animal being held helplessly while fighting for his life, no matter how futile, played on my mind.

Then I saw one of the men approach the cow, unsheathed a surprisingly short knife from his waist and point it somewhere on top of the cow’s head. At this point I was thinking, “Uh-oh, this will be messy and bloody.” But I was wrong. In a blink of an eye, literally, the man pressed the knife down, the cow went limp, fell to the ground and became lifeless almost in an instant. That quick.  Well, at least it didn’t suffer. It made me think and hope that this is the case for every meat-to-be in the slaughter houses.

Am I in the telco's Twilight Zone?

Published by crisn under Product Review

They say that customer satisfaction is a combination of good products plus good service. If that’s the case, then my recent (and thankfully my latest) transactions with the phone company Digitel is anything but. It all started when I tried to inquire regarding our phone subscription’s disconnection. Here’s what transpired:

Customer service hotline. Agent entertained me obviously while using a scripted set of dialogues with me being asked of several account info but when I asked if they process disconnection, he said, “Sir, we don’t do that. Call our office instead.” Just before I hung up, I asked if he knows what might be the requirements for disconnection. Valid ID lang daw. Immediately after the conversation I checked our phone directory’s yellow pages and saw a list of numbers for Cavite. Great.

I tried 2-3 numbers and all I got was a recording saying, “The number is not yet in service” or something to that effect. Feeling hopeless, I called their office of area manager’s number with the intent to report the problems with the listed office numbers. She wasn’t around, daw. So I asked the person at the other end of the line, if she knows any available and working number. She gave one. Then I asked if she knows what the requirements for disconnection are. Valid ID lang daw.

Directory assistance hotline. After failing to contact the number that the good secretary gave me, I remembered about the directory assistance hotline. And guess what? They don’t have an updated list of working numbers for Cavite! And that’s coming from a directory assistance hotline? Goodness. What could be more ironic than that?

Trying to be composed and convincing myself that maybe I have to go to their office indeed to process the subscription disconnection, I left home with a valid ID on hand. I arrived at Digitel’s office finding just one customer. Great. A few minutes later I was already talking to the customer service agent and politely said, while hiding any hint of previous frustrations, that I wanted our line disconnected . He smiled back, checked his computer, scribbled some notes on a piece of paper, handed it over to me and said, “Sir, here’s what you need…valid ID, phone, modem, and splitter.” Ti abi. Of course, I erupted, albeit controlled, but sarcastically replied back, “So it’s just indeed about time, I get our line disconnected…”

I was back home in no time, furious. Took the phone out and the rest of the Digitel items and I was back again to their office within a few minutes. This time, my anger is showing up even if I still tried to contain it and trying to be subtle as much as I can. My sweet revenge came soon, when he handed me a form to fill in and I was suppressing my evil smile while I wrote in front of him the comment: “Customer service is poor.” I could have written “sucks” but then again I did not – still trying to be civil despite all that.

Well, finally it’s goodbye Digitel for us. Hello, PLDT. In fact, I was there this morning to have our NDD activated. I was entertained by two well dressed employees…who doesn’t seem to know what they’re doing…and I eventually found out about them when my wife read the remark on the copy of the service request form at home. They’re OJTs. Man, am I in the twilight zone of the telecommunications world? Tsk, tsk, tsk.

A hypocrite will save the environment…

Published by crisn under Learning, Opinions and Advocacies

A couple of weeks ago, I had an interesting exchange of argument coming from one of those who commented my Facebook note (linked from my blog site). My then FB friend digress from the main topic, Dead but not gone which is about Cory Aquino, and the discussion went from good to bad. It ended with me being implied as a hypocrite. Ouch.

It started when I said that I’m just hoping that confettis won’t be used during the funeral as consequently this symbol of honor, respect and even sympathy will end up as garbage on the streets and finally, will clog our already restricted, if not full, drainage system. Sadly, my concern about its effect to the environment was fully misinterpreted. If it was out of ignorance or just the then overflowing emotion about the late ex-president’s death, I don’t know.

Being called a hypocrite is unpleasant no doubt, but that discussion hit me like a loud wake up call. True, I do things that contribute to the environmental problem – drive a petrol-powered car, buy and consume non-organic food, wear synthetic clothing, uses cleaning solvents that may contain hazardous chemicals that contaminate our waters, etcetera. But do I have a choice? Like many others, the answer is most likely no. But can I do something about it? The answer is a big YES.

Im likewise bringing my mug to school (whenever possible) - save on Starbucks, save the planet.

I'm likewise bringing my mug to school (whenever possible) - save on Starbucks, save the planet.

Right now I swear to step up from what I’ve been doing already – garbage segregation even if I’m quite sure the garbage collectors pile them up the truck among other wastes; making sure that our car is in tip-top condition; minimize the use of electricity; conserve water; and other things according to the 3 R’s – Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.

Fix that leak with Fluidmasters fill valve replacement kit.

To walk the talk I started it last saturday when I brought along a sandwich to school without the plastic wrapper and foil, and instead placed it inside a Tupperware container which is reusable. And just today, I fixed a defective toilet fill valve even if it means I’d be spending out of budget, and to mention being sweaty and dirty during the whole installation (although it took me just 10 minutes to do it). So there goes. I’ve somehow gained something out of that FB argument and will try to see what more I can to do to save the environment…and avoid once again being tagged as a hypocrite. Ti abi.

Digital manhole

Published by crisn under Product Review

What happened to me yesterday was like walking on the flooded Manila streets and disappearing all of a sudden after stepping on what is supposed to be a covered manhole. It came without a warning. All the files (musics, videos & podcasts) that I’ve been downloading to my Nokia 5800 for days got sucked into a digital manhole never to be heard or seen again.

I don’t know what caused the snafu, but I have a hint that it’s mainly because the cellphone was multitasking like it never did before – at least under my control. At one point it was downloading a Sesame Street podcast, downloading a full track music and a video from Universal Records, playing an mp3 track and sending an SMS. If that isn’t phone efficiency, what is? But just like man, phones do break down when pushed to its limit. And yesterday, mine just snapped and froze as if in fear or protest.

Now, I’m back to square one. Goodbye Elmo, Big Bird, Lars Ulrich, All the small things, Fergie, Gwen, Sting, Lady Gaga, Diana Krall, Boomtown Rats, Akon, Bryan Adams, Kjwan, Grammar Girl feed, Bob Marley, Venus/Serena (whatever) Williams, Sarah Jessica Parker, Bon Jovi, Boyzone…My only consolation right now is that I still have 400 plus more credits to recover them. Yet then again, it will take several nights again before they once again fill my Nokia 5800. This time I swear I’d be gentle. This time I think I’d have to skip replying back to my classmates while I’m downloading a podcast, a full track music, a full track video, and while playing an mp3 track all at the same time. Ti abi.

***

Another thing I discovered last night, while tinkering with my phone is that it has several access point in priority order. This means that when one Internet access point like the Wireless LAN doesn’t work (or connection gets cut off), the phone shifts to the next and this is bad news if it’s the service providers inet because it automatically deducts whatever credit is left – like one merciless leech. This discovery sent shivers and goosebumps as I realized that call center agents who have sampled my “constructive confrontation” may be after all right with their explanations – except maybe that they weren’t able to get the exact facts straight when I talked to them. Well, that’s learning for both of us. Once again, next time I’d be gentle. Hahaha.

School parking

Published by crisn under Driving, Motoring

It’s my 2nd term already in Ateneo Rockwell but it is just lately that I decided to avail of the school’s parking mainly because of one thing – avoid the Powerplant Mall or the nearby Starbucks. No, there’s neither a threat of the dreaded AH1N1 nor an occurrence of carnapping incidents. It’s just because I’m trying to save. Period.

Despite still having a parking fee just as much as in this classy mall, parking in Ateneo have kept me for two weeks already from frequenting the Dunkin Donut shop inside the mall or the more pricey Starbucks just across the street. Now I’ve been going to school with a mug (bearing my ex-employers logo) filled with home-brewed Peets coffee and sandwiches or any other bread to go along with it – in short and in plain Filipino, “nagbabaon na ako.”

My Ateneo parking experience though have been quite funny and scary. On my first day, as I reach the first basement level, I was so glad when I saw the area with about 3-4 more vacant spaces. I was thinking, “this isn’t bad…so only few people do bring their cars to school.” And so I hurriedly maneuvered myself to a spot near the elevator (access to the building) where the vacant slot is between two SUVs. Perfect. But just I was about to turn my engine off, I saw this bold sign on the wall: Dean. Law. My goodness, I’ve just occupied the spot reserved for a Dean. Of course, if that title isn’t as intimidating, the next word below it made me scram out of the area and into the crammed third basement parking.

Today is another story. Every Saturday I have a morning class and so this morning, just like the past 2 weeks, I was already in Rockwell, Makati before 7 am. This time though, I drove directly to Ateneo instead of the usual parking in front of the restos. I was the first student to be inside the parking basement. And upon reaching the student’s parking area I was surprised to see myself in a dimly lit and almost deserted area where if I could have been on an MTV, I would have seen Jacko and his posse jumping out of each column ready to start the video of “Bad” – well, good thing I wasn’t. And as if the thought of Jacko dancing around isn’t scary enough, the way to the elevator puts me this time into a Dawn of the Dead scene. Imagine this: I can barely see my way thru and what guided me, and what are just visible, were just my cellphone’s screen illumination and the flickering red push button of the elevator still a few meters ahead. Next time, if get to school this early, I might have to park back in front of the restos and see if I can resist the temptation of the coffee with the green round logo. Ti abi.

***

My recent parking experience made me think, “Is it only Intel that doesn’t have a reserved parking space?” If yes, I’m now missing it more this time.

Nokia 5800 firmware update done

Published by crisn under Product Review

I’ve just finished updating my Nokia 5800’s firmware from V11.0.008 to 21.0.025. It took me approximately 3 hours using the following setup: a Lenovo S10 and a DSL connection speed of just around 125 kbps. That’s not bad compared to the Nokia Care center’s (in selected malls) 2-hour commitment – i.e., if you’re the only customer at that time. As recommended before updating the firmware, I backed up all my files thru the Nokia Suite but so far the installation went fine, albeit being slow, and luckily none of the files and settings were corrupted or changed. My cellphone is now with my personal QA test personnel, my wife. She’s installing an application daw so that she can take a look at her farm using my phone - which by the way is the main reason why she’s been reminding me to update its firmware. Women. Hahahaha.

This morning, as the rain poured hard and with nothing to do at home other than the usual baby stuffs, we took turns checking the music downloading capability of this bum tool (no pun intended). Since we purchased this a month ago, today was the only time that we got to open the packet that contains the instruction on how to access the site where free 500 full track musics can be downloaded and which surprised me because it took only around 4-5 minutes for each track to be completely saved. The list of available music though are limited only to that of Universal Records label. But if you’re a fan of Bryan Adams, Metallica, Bjork, Boomtown Rats, and Bob Marley just to name a few, then I guess you’re in for a treat.

Dead but not gone

Published by crisn under Opinions and Advocacies, Politics

I was trying to make sense of what is happening right now with almost everyone glorifying Cory Aquino’s life. What I find sad about it all is it just doesn’t seem to sink in to me. No offense, but since then I just knew Cory as probably a good mother but a weak leader.

For the first time, yesterday while I was on my way to school I tuned in to an AM station (630) mainly to check on how the traffic is doing since I’ll be passing by somewhere near Manila. That time I already conditioned my mind that I’ll be in for a long drive so I was never in a hurry and readied myself to give the reason why I’m late in class – traffic.

Driving in moderate speed starting from Cavite, I was able to listen intently to the radio host say a lot of good things about Cory. And with her describing how people (students, employees) are getting out of their building just to meet the convoy that was carrying Cory’s coffin made me reflect what these people see in her that I don’t.

On TV, over radio, in the newspapers, on the streets and even on Twitter and facebook, the number of people pouring their support while she was still in the hospital and grief over her death says it all – they see Cory as very good person. She was so good that some people even called for her proclamation as a saint. Hmmm. But wether or not she deserves to be one, I now think that a multitude of people all over the nation and even abroad can’t be that wrong or just be influenced by the the media coverage (and social networking sites) to take this chance to wear or carry anything that’s yellow.

Now I guess, I just have to concede that I was wrong, disrespectful and insensitive. I just hope however that whatever inspirations and influences she had left to all these people who flocked the streets, braved the erratic rains and sun’s heat to see her for the last time won’t get buried along with her. And as I’ve mentioned on my recent blog, that hopefully this time we will sustain (can’t stress this word enough) the unity that most of us have once again shown and that we won’t put to waste the unselfish love, sacrifice and patriotism that both Cory and Ninoy have imparted to all of us. Both are now dead, but hopefully not gone. May they rest in peace.

***

Just barely a year ago, I wrote this a blog with this title: Heroes Wanted: Dead or Alive. It was my own tribute to the iamninoy.com campaign wherein I promised myself that this year I’ll make my vote count – on top of trying to be a good citizen of this country. Well, I already had myself registered for next year’s election. Next step (and the hardest) is to make an informed choice and not just rely on what is being shown on TV. As my professor in TSLEADER (he is by the way a loyal supporter and friend of the Aquinos and have stayed most of the time with Cory’s family during her last ordeal) have lectured before, what we actually need now in this country is adaptive change. According to him such change isn’t easy, but the way I see and understand it, it is the way to go if we want to move on for good. And so whoever can offer it, and show he’s sincere about it, he’ll get my vote.

Sleepless pessimist

Published by crisn under Opinions and Advocacies

Can’t sleep.

Maybe it’s the mug of Peets coffee I had brought along with me in anticipation of a jam-packed road to Roxas Boulevard on my way to school.

Maybe it’s the another cup of brewed coffee I took in preparation for a long drive home.

Maybe, just maybe, because once again I find myself in a situation where the chances of me being called a fart-vent (for the lack of a better word) by most people nowadays is highly likely.

Or maybe, I’d just finish this glass of milk then put myself to sleep hoping that tomorrow, after August 5, a month after August 5 or better yet years after that, we will indeed be one and that we won’t just limit ourselves to bearing the ubiquitous color that can now be seen all over the place.

Let’s make their legacy prevail…and this time, let it be real.

Chasing sushis and balloon

Published by crisn under Food, Life

Just this afternoon, I finally finished another monthly task that I’ve been doing for more than half a year already – family expenses accounting. After learning how to do it from a personal financial planning training, I’ve never ignored a single receipt and have always tried my best to account each expense somewhere around the end of each month – some month’s result were shocking, some were fulfilling, while others (if not most) were challenging. July however was somewhat amusing.

As much as I now value more each penny we’ve got, I still believe that there are things that need to be discovered and that holding back from doing so might come as a regret later. And as much as I’d like to be as thrifty as possible, sometimes the call to experience things is just hard to hold back – like eating conveyorized sushi and buying the first ever balloon.

Last week, after months of eyeing this Japanese resto in the SM’s Mall of Asia, we arrived at the mall just in time for Sakae Sushi’s buffet meal – 2pm. The juice and biscuits we ate for lunch (somewhere nearby) were just enough to keep us full during the drive and well enough to keep us excited about the thought of chasing sushis as it pass by our table.

It is fast...

It is fast...

...but were faster - our emptied plates : )

...but we're faster - our emptied plates : )

A couple of plates later, surprisingly or not, I mastered how to spot the perfect sushi caring less if it’s colored yellow, green or red – If it weren’t for the buffet time, each color has its corresponding prize and one has to be picky if he’s dining on a budget. Needless to say, I enjoyed each time even if my wife and I had to take turns between watching our little boy and “ambushing” the sushis. And it’s either we’re that fast or there’s just a few sushi variety available, but it must have just taken less than an hour for us to taste every sushi Sakae can offer. Well, how can I complain, it must be what’s Php 399/pax is worth. Not bad considering that I get to eat in a place where my familiarity with it was once just because of MTV videos or Hollywood movies.

Another first that day, was buying our little boy his balloon. After coming out of Sakae Sushi resto, my wife, having mother instinct was able to easily locate one stall that sells a dizzying selection of floating balloons that our kid was pointing aimlessly (and screaming like one crazy Beatles fan) until he steadied his tiny index finger to a recognizable square yellow figure that even I was suddenly attracted to its bucktooth-smile the moment I saw it. A few seconds of exchanging Php 105 with the seemingly irresistible Sponge Bob, I saw our kid beaming with satisfaction of having his first ever cartoon character balloon.

The selection, the pick, the moments.

Soon, he was running around in one part of the crowded mall as if he’s the only one who has it (but I’m quite sure that one kid somewhere nearby was feeling the same thing). Sponge Bob, though still smiling, got all the abuse from his tiny fan. It was pinched, pulled down, yanked, at one point trampled over and was blamed for a couple of stumbles. And just as his tiny fan decided to bring him home, he somehow was able to cut himself loose.

I was walking ahead of my wife and kid when I heard the desperate call. I knew I froze for a sec when I look back and saw Sponge Bob bobbing up and down the mall’s ceiling. I couldn’t believe smiling down on us is a hundred-peso balloon which immediately reminded of the Filipino nursery rhyme: Ako ay may lobo, lumipad sa langit…sayang ang pera ko, binili ng lobo. Kung pagkain sana, nabusog pa ako.(I had a balloon, it flew to the heavens…it was a waste of my money. If only I could’ve spent it for food…).

So even if I was surprised after diligently typing expense details and to see that we’re “in the greens” , next month, I hope to see improvements in our spending. In fact, I have already told my wife one clear instruction: no more balloons for Marcus. Hopefully, he won’t hate me for this. Ti abi.
